Luciano Frigerio ‘Girasole’ lounge Chair, Italy 1960s
The ‘Girasole’ chair by Luciano Frigerio is a distinctive example of Italian Space Age design from the 1960s.
The chair consists of a white lacquered fiberglass half sphere resting on a black lacquered fiberglass ring, allowing the seat to move freely in different directions and angles. The sculptural form is complemented by the original rich red velvet cushion, shaped like the petals of a flower. This particular detail gave the model its name ‘Girasole’, which is the Italian word for sunflower.
Luciano Frigerio was part of a generation of Italian designers and craftsmen closely connected to figures such as Gio Ponti and Franco Albini. His work combines refined craftsmanship with the more experimental forms and materials that defined Italian design during the 1960s.
This example remains in very good original condition and presents beautifully with its warm upholstery contrasting against the glossy fiberglass shell.
