Mid-century Sofa in Cognac Leather and wood by Pacific Green, Australia 1980s
A beautiful early edition sofa model “Cayenne” in original cognac leather and coconut palm wood, made by Pacific Green in Australia 1980s. Its sweeping sides and backrest give the piece a sculptural presence, softened by the warm colour and beautiful overall patina of the original cognac leather.
Pacific Green’s story began in Sydney in 1973 as Post & Rail, founded by Bruce Dowse and Peter Ryan. The company sought to develop a distinct Australian furniture identity through natural materials and tactile finishes. This interest in material character became a defining part of the brand’s approach.
The sofa reflects that sensibility through the contrast between its padded cognac leather interior and curved coconut palm wooden exterior that was sourced in Fiji, which was an eco friendly option already back in the 80s. Visible leather lacing draws attention to the construction, while the stitched cognac leather seat follows the contours of the seat and back. Its striking shape is also interesting from the rear, allowing it to be placed freely within a room.
PS: We also have a pair of matching lounge chairs to create a complete set.
